  Biography

     American bass Steven Humes continues to distinguish himself as one of the most successful in his field.  After singing in the Metropolitan National Council Finals in 2003, Steven Humes moved to Germany to take a contract position with the Bavarian State Opera.  There he has developed an extensive repertoire including Sarastro, Wurm, Ramphis, Publio, Biterolf, Sam, Gremin, Lodovico, Pistola, Truffaldin, Wagner, Eremit, among others.

     His recent DVD recording of Mahagonny with Los Angeles Opera won two Classical Grammys in 2009.  Opera news hailed, "Steven Humes was a stentorian Alaska Wolf Joe."  He returns to the role in Madrid's Teatro Real celebrating Gerard Mortier's beginning as intendant in the 2010-11 season.

     Upcoming engagements include Fafner in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried in Christof Loy's Ring in Geneva, Osmin with the Canadian Opera Company, Frau ohne Schatten with the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Christian Tielemann and Salome in Tokyo's Saito Kienen Festival with Seiji Ozawa.  Other future roles in new productions include Farfallo in Die Schweigsame Frau, Don Fernando in Fidelio, Capellio in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Oroveso in Norma.

         Mr. Humes has been recently heard as the Commendatore with Italy's Rieti Festival, Timur with Atlanta Opera, Colline with the Opera Theater of St. Louis, Walter in Der Zerbrochene Krug with Los Angeles Opera and as Reinmar in Tannhäuser with the Munich Staatsoper's festival in Tokyo with Zubin Mehta conducting.

     Sought after as a concert soloist, Mr. Humes' repertoire includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the Mozart Requiem, Dvorak's Stabat Mater, the Verdi Requiem and Bach's St. Matthew's Passion.  Mr Humes has performed in many celebrated concert venues including NYC's Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, the Naval Academy in Annapolis MD and Chicago's Ravinia Festival and regularly performs with the Rundfunk and Philharmonie orchestras of Munich.

     Other recordings of note include Grammy nominated La Traviata with Ivor Bolton conducting, Idomeneo (DVD) in Munich's Cuvillies Theater with Kent Nagano, Alice in Wonderland (DVD) with Kent Nagano named Best World Premier 2007 by OpernWelt magazine, and Roberto Deveraux (DVD) with Edita Gruberova.
