Biography American bass Steven Humes began his musical career singing such roles as Fasolt, Sarastro, Bluebeard and Bartolo with several companies in the New York, New England and Chicago areas, including New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, New Jersey Opera Theater, The Ravinia Festival, Wolf Trap Opera and Chicago Opera Theater. After singing in the Grand Finals Concert of the Metropolitan Opera National Council in 2003, Mr. Humes became a contract member with the Bavarian State Theater in Munich, Germany. There, under the baton of Zubin Mehta he developed several other roles on the international stage including Sarastro and Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, Biterolf and Reinmar in Tannhäuser, Colline in La bohème, Eremit in Der Freischütz, Il frate in Don Carlo, Sam in Ballo in maschera, Marchese di Calatrava in La forza del Destino, Publio in La clemenza di Tito and Die Nachtwächter in Die Meistersinger. With over 300 international performances behind him, future seasons will see Steven singing the roles of Sarastro, Gremin, Lodovico, Wurm, Pistola, Truffaldin among others. |

Steven Humes has recently returned to the States for several productions including Alaska Wolf Joe in the US premier of Kurt Weil's Mahagonny with Los Angeles Opera, directed by John Doyle and starring Audra McDonald and Patti Lupone, a debut as Timur in Turandot with Atlanta Opera and a return to Los Angeles Opera for their Recovered Voices series as Walter in Victor Ulmann's Der Zerbrochene Krug.
Creating the role of the King of Hearts in Unsuk Chin's Alice in
Wonderland, directed by Achim Freyer, Steven Humes sang with
"fantastic falsetto and smooth bass", propelling this production
to receive the title of New Production of the Year, 2006. Mr. Humes
can be found on the recording of La Traviata with Anja
Harteros and Piotr Beczala that was not only named Classical
Recording of the Year for 2006, but also nominated for a Classical
Grammy in 2008. |
